May 1st, 2011. A day that will live on in infamy. Ankit Desai, dear friend and most prominent bruncher, celebrated his 33rd birthday. The US military found, shot and killed Osama Bin Laden, mastermind of the 911 terrorist attacks, hidden in a compound in Pakistan. And while paying the tab at Marx Cafe, we were able to divide the check evenly 6 ways, add in 20% tip and  each pay our own share in CASH—with no borrowing, no skimping and no haggling. $21 even. Everyone had it in their wallet and everyone put it on the table. Done.

Figuring out the bill is usually the worst part of going out w friends. Do we split it evenly? Everyone pay for what they owe? What about that one person who only got a side of fries and no drink? What do they pay? Is it rude to put in 13 credit cards for all different amounts? Often times in these situations, someone just gives up—offering to loan someone the money, throw in the extra $15, or in really desperate situations, just pay the tab themselves under the promise of ‘we’ll just figure it out later’ or ‘I’ll get you next time we go out’ (code for: I can’t believe that schmuk just picked up the whole thing!!! He’ll never see that $$$ again!!!!).

It truly is a magic day when everything works out perfectly, and we were lucky to have to friends visiting from out of town there to witness it. Don’t be fooled, Justin and Danielle. You may think from our afternoon at Marx Cafe that Washington pays for everything in cash, only spends what it earns or never pushes its bills onto someone else…but I’ve had more than enough brunches to tell you that just ain’t the case.**
