We all reach a point in our mid-twenties when we start to go to a lot of weddings. Cousins, friends, college roommates… it’s like a never-ending stream of engagements. As the years tick by, the number starts to increase exponentially until you wake up one day and realize that every Saturday or Sunday between March and October will be spent watching a loving couple in a synagogue/church/grassy field/barn/ reception hall/hotel ballroom/gazebo/beach/space ship/mountain top take their vows of affection and devotion, blurring together in your mind until it becomes one giant mush of twist and shout, risotto and champagne toasts.

So why, you ask, would five seemingly normal women by their own volition set their alarm for 4:00am (okay fine, it was more like 7:30) on a Friday morning to watch yet ANOTHER wedding?!?! And a wedding of people who they don’t even know?!?! And not even in person, on TV!!!

Because it’s the ROYAL WEDDING!!!! And little do they know it, but Kate and Will are actually our new best friends!

The Royal Wedding, aka the wedding of Princess Diana’s oldest son William to Kate Middleton, his longtime college girlfriend, has to have been one of the most highly anticipated events of my short lifetime. The proposal, the ceremony, the dress, the ring, the choir, the entourage, the reception, the party after the reception…  Even if you didn’t give a crap about this event at all, there’s no way you could have escaped absorbing some of the chatter over the past five months. This was THE EVENT, with people flying from all over the world to sit for three days outside of Buckingham Palace as if they were camping out to get tickets for the Grateful Dead—and goddamn it, we were going to watch it (as close to) live (as possible)!

But why do I really care?!?! It’s not like I was a huge Princess Di fan, or have a pseudo-creepy princess fantasy, or am some sort of British history buff. I don’t even usually care that much about wedding dresses—I mean it’s white and it either looks good or bad, right?  But like it or not, Will and Kate are my new best friends! Somehow, there is something about Will and Kate that is sorta, I don’t know, the same as everyone else I know. They met at school, were roommates, played sports, go out with their friends, hang out at home, and despite the fact that their are heirs to the soon-to-be-meaningless British thrown, are just kind of normal people. Hell, my brother even took a class with Will when he was studying for a semester at St. Andrew’s! These are actual normal people who happen to have Elton John, Posh Spice and Mr. Bean at their wedding! Amazing!!!

Many thanks to Gina, her massive man-magnet HD TV, and some delicious scones—it was great to share the moment with our bff’s Wills and Kate. And fortunately, their wedding was on Friday, which meant it didn’t conflict with any of the other 9,000 we have on our calendars for the year.
